China mainland's eSIM
China is the destination where connectivity planning matters most. Domestic networks filter access to many services travellers depend on — mapping, messaging, email and cloud storage among them — and a locally bought SIM sits behind those same restrictions. Payment is another hurdle: taxis, metro gates and most shops expect a QR-based wallet.
A travel eSIM routes your data through an international roaming path rather than a domestic subscription. In practice that means many services blocked on local connections remain reachable. This is not a guarantee, and it is not a substitute for a VPN if you need one — but it is a meaningfully different starting point.
We list 100 China mainland plans from $0.95. Daily bundles suit a Beijing or Shanghai stopover; 15 and 30-day options fit a wider route including Xi'an, Chengdu or Guilin. Install the profile before you fly, since setting up an eSIM once you have arrived is considerably harder.
Networks and coverage
90 of our 100 China plans include 5G, and Chinese urban mobile infrastructure is among the world's most extensive — coverage is comprehensive in cities, on high-speed rail and in metro tunnels. Rural western regions and high-altitude Tibetan areas are thinner.
These eSIM plans provide mobile data and do not include standard calls or SMS. Keep your regular SIM available for verification codes and use internet messaging apps over data. 65 plans are reloadable. Note that Hong Kong and Macao use separate networks and are listed as their own destinations.
