Nepal's eSIM
Nepal is worth being straightforward about. Our selection here is small — 14 plans, starting at $3.65, with no 5G and no SMS on any of them. That reflects what is available wholesale rather than what we would prefer to offer, and for some travellers a local SIM bought in Kathmandu will be the better value option.
Where a travel eSIM makes sense is convenience on arrival: install the profile before you fly and it works when you land at Tribhuvan, with no queue and no paperwork at a time when you are likely tired and arranging a transfer.
For trekking, treat this differently. Coverage on the Annapurna and Everest Base Camp routes exists in places but is unreliable, and no mobile plan is a substitute for the satellite communication that trekking agencies carry. Use the eSIM for Kathmandu, Pokhara and the road sections.
Networks and coverage
None of our 14 Nepal plans include 5G — all run on 4G/LTE, which is adequate in Kathmandu, Pokhara and the Terai towns. None include SMS, so plan around that if you rely on verification codes.
Coverage follows the road network and the valleys. Higher trekking routes have intermittent service at teahouses on the main trails and none at all off them. Above roughly 4,000 metres, assume no connection.
