South Africa's eSIM
South Africa is a self-drive country, and the driving needs preparation. Distances are long, the Garden Route has more worthwhile stops than a map shows, and load-shedding — scheduled power cuts — affects traffic lights, fuel stations and sometimes mobile masts. Knowing the current schedule is genuinely useful, and it lives in an app.
Install the profile before you fly; it activates at Cape Town, O.R. Tambo or King Shaka. Useful on arrival, because ride-hailing from inside the terminal is the standard safety advice, and Johannesburg in particular is not a city to improvise transport in.
We list 34 South Africa plans from $1.71 — a smaller selection than our European destinations, reflecting wholesale availability. Longer bundles generally suit the self-drive itineraries most visitors follow.
Networks and coverage
18 of our 34 South Africa plans include 5G; the rest run on 4G/LTE, which is the practical standard. Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban are well covered, as are the N1, N2 and N3 highway corridors and the Garden Route towns.
Kruger and the private reserves have coverage at camps and gates but not throughout, and the Karoo interior has long gaps. These eSIM plans provide mobile data and do not include standard calls or SMS. Keep your regular SIM available for verification codes and use internet messaging apps over data. Note that load-shedding can affect mast uptime in some areas.
